American Attack on Caracas Raises Anxieties of Future Danish Territory Annexation.

Recent American military action in the South American nation and the seizure of its president have ignited apprehension regarding America's designs on Greenland. Followers of the former president's base have reportedly turned their attention to the strategically important island in the wake of the operations in South America.

Provocative Posts and Official Outrage

Merely a short time following the initiation of the Venezuelan campaign, a well-known conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a symbolic map. The picture depicted Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word caption: "SOON."

This overt threat to claim the mineral-rich region, which is a part of the NATO alliance, triggered immediate and strong criticism from Denmark's officials.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should keep cooperate as such. US security is also the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the United States work together to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat further highlighted that Denmark had significantly increased its military budget recently, allocating a substantial amount expressly for Arctic and regional defence. "And yes, we demand complete respect for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he added.

Administrative Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The situation were further complicated by the previous naming of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the president, stating it was an "privilege" to work in a volunteer role to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this envoy commended the president's actions, linking it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the American leader has consistently alarmed transatlantic partners with his expressed interest in Greenland. The territory is considered critically important for national security and potential resource extraction. It currently hosts the most northerly US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the president declined to rule out the resorting to military force to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes during growing great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Friction and Indigenous Resistance

In response to this persistent "drumbeat" of intent, Denmark's security agency took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland delivered a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a complex sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's residents desire independence from Denmark, there is simultaneously scant desire to join the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare independence for over a decade.

Analyst Assessment: A Credible Scenario?

Military experts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in defence admitted she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could intervene about it," she observed.
