The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
