Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
