Trumpism's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis forecast his energy policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense regarding him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message is about love for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to aggression is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The obvious and direct truth that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of profound affection concentrated on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest of Us
So I have been inspired to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump arise in this past year. It has provided great solace to help build the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you welcome them and welcome him or reject?
America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, just as Christianity is best defended by relationship to what makes it distinctive and magnificent, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it imply feigning the most negative of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both meekness and faith, a blend that committed American Christians should embrace.
